Lot 81
Near East, Kingdom of Urartu (eastern Anatolia, Armenia, northwest Iran), ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. An impressive bronze bracelet of cuff-like form, hammered and engraved with geometric and floral decoration. The exterior surface presents a central rosette flanked by finely incised borders of zigzag and linear motifs, framed by patterned registers resembling woven or architectural ornament. The design is executed with characteristic precision, its ornamented surface standing in lively contrast to the green patina of age. Two small perforations at the ends suggest fastening elements or ties, indicating the piece was intended to be worn securely. This bracelet, with its broad form and deeply patinated surface, embodies both the artistic refinement and the martial, hierarchical culture of the Urartian kingdom, whose artisans excelled in bronze and stonework. Size: 2.4" Diameter x 2.6" W (6.1 cm x 6.6 cm)
Bronze jewelry of the Urartian period was not only a marker of personal adornment but also an indicator of status and cultural identity, often used in burial contexts to accompany the elite into the afterlife. The combination of floral rosette, geometric registers, and finely ordered borders reflects the Urartian aesthetic, a synthesis of local Anatolian tradition and wider Near Eastern artistic vocabulary.
