Description:

Northern Mesopotamia, Urartu, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A rare Urartian bronze votive plaque depicting a standing male figure worked in repousse. The figure appears frontally, dressed in a long robe with incised hem, his back bearing two crosswise quivers, and his hands firmly gripping a tall standard. His form is surrounded by a field of circular punchwork, while the crenellated top edge echoes the battlements of Urartian fortresses. Perforations around the edges show the plaque was once affixed to a surface, likely as part of a cultic display within a temple or fortress shrine. This plaque belongs to a known group of Urartian bronze votive sheets, many discovered in the famous hoard from Giyimli, which contained over 500 bronze plaques dedicated to deities. These plaques were typically nailed to walls or wooden panels as offerings, embodying the devotion of warriors and kings to the pantheon of Haldi, Teisheba, and Shivini. Size: 3" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
