Description:

Urartia, modern day Armenia/Turkey., ca. 1000 - 800 BCE. Two sections of ancient bronze armor, probably a part of a protective belt. It has been decorated with a design of 8 horses and warriors, wielding swords and wearing typical Urartian conical helmets, in two vertical rows, the remainder decorated with repeating rows of zig-zags. The Urartians were constantly in conflict with the Assyrians, making war -- and the manufacture and use of armor -- a common occurrence. It seems likely that the figures were stamped from behind with a hammer, using carved stamps while the metal was still hot. Size: 33" L x 5.5" W (83.8 cm L x 14.0 cm W)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, 2025; ex-Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, acquired between 1985 and 2003
