Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, ca. 3500 BCE. A fascinating pottery anthropomorphic figure with thin slits for eyes and mouth and a low relief nose and brow. A massive coiffure, deeply parted at its center, crowns the head. The body is simple, but has both female (breasts) and male (phallus) characteristics. Fired clay figures like this one were produced, starting at the major Valdivian site of Real Alto, roughly five hundred years after similar ones were made in stone. Although most examples are female, some, like this one have both male and female properties. These figures were found near hearths and food preparation areas, as well as in burials of important personages. Size: 1" W x 3.05" H (2.5 cm x 7.7 cm); 3.8" H (9.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
