Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian, ca. 4000 to 2000 BCE. Skillfully carved from shell of white and russet red hues, a figural piece with a human head presenting a bold visage comprised of beady eyes, a protruding nose adorned by a 'nosering', and full lips. The figure leans upon bent elbows with both hands placed upon the cheeks. Behind this is a perforation for suspending the piece followed by an integral raised cylindrical spout. Quite an imaginative work! Size: 2.375" H (6 cm); 2.875" H (7.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, USA collector from 1966; ex Lands Beyond Gallery
