Description:

Pre-Columbian, Veracruz/Vera Cruz, Mexico, ca. 600 CE. Quite an unusual piece. Hand built from terracotta and painted with red slip, this figural, cylindrical vessel was created as part of an incensario, note the rather large hole on the gentleman's collar. This rendering has us a bit stumped with regards to its iconography. Given that the figure is elaborately adorned with a fanciful plaited coiffure, large ear ornaments, a grand pectoral and collar, this figure likely represented a personage of elite status, likely a shaman or leader. The looped right hand tells us that at one point in time, he held a ritualistic instrument in his hands. A bewildering yet mesmerizing artifact! Size: 10"H (25.5 cm) x 6- 3/4"W (17 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Poolos collection, ex-Adeon Gallery, acquired before the 1970's. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #102514
