Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, southern Veracruz, Nopiloa, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A finely mold-made buff earthenware head from a Sonriente (smiling figure) presenting a characteristically happy visage with wonderful features including almond-shaped eyes, an arched browline, smooth high cheekbones, and most characteristically, a happy smile. He also dons a grand headdress over his long tresses that is adorned by a woven mat (guilloche) associated with rulership in Mesoamerica, rather than the usual waterbird design, as well as large round ear ornaments. A finely sculpted example with great charm from the ancients of Veracruz that is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face! Size: 4.8" W x 4.9" H (12.2 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-old Midwestern private collection since the 1970s

#155581

  • Condition: The head was probably attached to an articulated figure - using the opening on the back of the neck. This opening has a small loss from its edge but otherwise the head is in excellent condition with great preservation of details and numerous mineral and soil deposits on the surface.
