Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz), ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A beautiful container used for holding petite items or perhaps cosmetic material, mold-formed from orange-red pottery. The top of the vessel features a trio of recessed chambers separated by thin walls, with two of a bulbous form, and one of a petite semicircular form. The bottom of the vessel depicts an attractive stylized frog with a rotund body and a pair of flipper-form feet projecting off of the verso. The stylized countenance features bulging hemispherical eyes, a pair of impressed nostrils, thick lips, and a wide smile. Along the spine of the amphibian is a rectangular panel enclosed with tab-like protrusions, the interior filled with an intricate pseudo-glyph that perhaps depicts an abstract anthropomorphic figure surrounded by wavy tendrils. Size: 6.375" W x 2.25" H (16.2 cm x 5.7 cm)
