Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz) culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery cover shaped like a four-cornered structure meant to top a larger incensario. Each wall has a triangular gap along the bottom meant to allow the sweet-smelling incense smoke to escape, and trios of T-shaped perforations decorate the upper borders. A semicircular handle atop the body enabled the lid to be easily applied and removed as necessary. Size: 4.375" W x 4.75" H (11.1 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired between the 1970s and 1990s
