Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A fantastical whistle featuring a long tube for creating sound with a conical mouthpiece and a broad openwork disc with a seated female figure on one end. She sits with her legs along the length of the whistle, her arms spread wide. She wears a skirt and large necklace as well as a delightful headdress with a beaded border and two projecting tabs. Pale blue pigment decorates her clothing and the openwork face of the flute, which has temple-shaped cutouts that divide it into six segments. Is she a priestess or shaman? A ruler? A musician? It is fun to speculate! Size: 5.7" W x 9.25" H (14.5 cm x 23.5 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
