Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Vera Cruz, Remojadas culture, ca. 3rd to 9th century CE. A pottery figure of a seated woman rendered in a stylized, abstract form that communicates serenity and timeless devotion. Sitting cross-legged in a prayerful pose, with hands resting firmly on her knees, she emanates calm and composure - suggestive of her role as a spiritual intermediary or offering figure. She wears an elaborate feathered headdress, highlighted with black tar - a bituminous pigment known as chapapote, earrings, a pendant necklace, and delicately incised body decorations - hallmarks of status and ceremonial importance. Figures like this were commonly placed in elite tombs or ceremonial shrines and functioned as spiritual intermediaries. Size: 7" W x 11.25" H (17.8 cm x 28.6 cm)
