Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz (Vera Cruz) culture, Postclassic period, ca. 13th to early 16th century CE. A remarkable, hand-carved volcanic stone sculpture of a male figure shown seated on a chair or stool. Highly stylized, the ancient figure presents an expressive visage with coffee bean-shaped eyes beneath arched brows, a prominent nose, an open mouth as though chanting or speaking, and a square jaw. A pair of bulbous ear adornments flank his huge head while a high crested headdress comprised of 5 ridges towers above it. The figure stretches his arms outwards so his hands can hold an object above his bent knees. Size: 5" L x 3.4" W x 9.2" H (12.7 cm x 8.6 cm x 23.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA collection; ex-private Virginia, USA collection, from the 1950s
