Description:

Egypt, Coptic, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A superb polychrome Coptic textile with a border presenting repeated frontal female visages, each with facial features delineated in black on a beige ground and donning gold colored cap-like headdresses. Alternating with these lovely faces are botanical specimens, possibly papyrus or lotus plants, with green leaves, golden stems, and red blossoms - all against a dark blue/black ground and trimmed with a thin scarlet line. Within this border is a register depicting an arcade or succession of arches with each arch housing a red flowering plant or bud. A beautiful Coptic textile, replete with fine technique and artistry as well as intriguing iconography. Size: textile sections measure 14" W x 8.25" H (35.6 cm x 21 cm); on burlap 16.5" W x 10" H (41.9 cm x 25.4 cm)
