Description:

Native American, North America, Hohokam, Sacaton Red-on-Buff Phase, ca. 900-1100 CE This special jar stems from the Sacaton Red-on-Buff phase of the Hohokam Sedentary period. In form, these vessels typically possess short necks and flared rims like earlier forms. They also boast what is referred to as the "Gila shoulder" - that sleek edge running around the vessel at its widest point. The Sacaton usually set this shoulder quite low. Usually designs are geometric and feature interlocking scrolls framed within rectangular panels. This example, however, is extremely rare in that it features a figurative element with three rows of dancers holding hands as they prance around the olla. 5-1/2"H x 6-1/4"W at widest point

Provenance: Ex-Hagen Collection, acquired in the 1940s

  • Condition: Repaired from about four large pieces. Some paint enhancement noted. Else intact and excellent.
