Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful handwoven camelid wool textile with a slightly looser brown weave in the center bordered by colorful panels in a tighter weave. The register of stepped motifs are not only fascinating interlocking geometric shapes, but upon further inspection they are also stylized animals in profile with a singular eye and nostril. These colors are a pleasing combination and well preserved with only minor fading! Size of textile: 35" L x 25" W (88.9 cm x 63.5 cm); modern cloth backing: 36.5" L x 28.5" W (92.7 cm x 72.4 cm)
