Western Europe, England, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A lovely letter opener with a carnelian handle and sterling silver blade. The blade has a pointed tip and cutting edge that run to a handle decorated with encircling ribs and incised lines above a faceted carnelian stone. A small rivet attached the stone to the tang of the blade. A fancy opener for a time when letters were the main source of communication! Size: 6.125" L x .5" W (15.6 cm x 1.3 cm); quality of silver: 94%
