Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A forged-iron axe head of a utilitarian form with a rounded triangular socketing shaft behind a vertical chopping blade. The minimalist design of the axe head suggests it was used for tasks such as splitting wood and shaping softer materials like mud bricks rather than for warfare. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 5.125" L x 1.8" W (13 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Starborn Creations, Sedona, Arizona USA; ex-private German collection, purportedly found in Lithuania
