Description:

Eastern Steppes, Southern Europe, ca. 9th - 11th century CE. Eastern Steppes / Southern Europe, Viking Age, ca. 9th–11th century CE. A rare and compelling hand-forged and cast iron flail or chain mace, comprising two principal components: a solid square mace head with pointed corners and high-relief concentric diamond elements decorating five faces, connected by a loop-link iron chain to a long conical socket with a lower band of crosshatched decoration.

The conical socket, decorated with a crosshatched band, would have received a wooden haft, completing the weapon. Chain weapons of this type required exceptional skill to wield effectively and were prestige weapons associated with elite warriors of the eastern frontier. Size: 26.63” (67.6cm) overall length.

Provenance: Emily & Walter Mead Collection, Santa Fe, NM., active 1960’s - 1990’s. (Mead Paper Corporation family).
