Description:

Oceania, North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large hand-woven fiber mat, likely made for sleeping. The mat is woven with thin fronds from the hala tree that forms long bushy tassels on one end, and a thicker fringe at the other end. These fronds are known as "lau hala" and when woven together they are referred to as "ulana lau hala." The leaves are water resistant and durable, which makes them ideal for many different items such as sails, baskets, and mats like this example. Mats had several uses in Hawaiian culture and were known as moena with added adjective words to describe the quality or size which determined what the mats were used for. The highest quality mats (moena makali'i) were used for sleeping, while coarser pieces may have been for floors. Size: 74" L x 42" W (188 cm x 106.7 cm)
