Description:

North America, Northwest Coast, ca. 1950s. A special bison horn carving of an eagle in flight with raised wings suggesting the bird of prey is soaring through the skies above and peering ahead with red glass eyes (and black pupils). Note the impressive technique of this piece, with each feather so meticulously delineated, the wonderful contrast of the dark pigment and the natural horn color with its wonderful patterns imbuing the surface with even more interest. The eagle was known as the "master of the skies" and the mighty raptor was a figure of great significance in Northwestern cosmology. The eagle sent messages and prayers to the Creator, and if an eagle was seen during a prayer session, it was taken as a sign that a prayer had been accepted. Eagle feathers remain sacred symbols of prayer. A wonderful eagle carving, replete with undeniable artistry and layers of symbolic meaning. Size: 13.25" W x 5.5" H (33.7 cm x 14 cm); 9.6" H (24.4 cm) on included custom stand.
