Description:

Ivory Coast. Dynamic and powerfully conceived We-Guere mask, carved as an energetic assemblage of angular, cubist volumes. A broad, shelf-like forehead overhangs bulging pod-shaped eyes set above narrow slit openings, while thick tubular secondary eyes flank a wide triangular nose. The parallel open jaws, fitted with aluminum teeth, are framed by carved tusks and triangular projecting cheeks, with remnants of attached animal hair enhancing its dramatic presence. Evidence of repeated ritual use appears in the layered, repainted surface. A metal nail remains embedded beneath the chin, with traces of animal pelt still visible around the eyes and mouth. Traces of blue, white and red pigment. Thick layered rough patina. Among the We-Guere, such masks, often worn in powerful masquerades, served as agents of spiritual protection, social regulation, and community justice. Their exaggerated, fierce physiognomies were intentionally designed to evoke and channel formidable bush spirits during performances that mediated conflict, ensured adherence to community norms, and safeguarded the village from malevolent forces. Size: 12-1/2"H. x 9"W. (32x 23cm).
