Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Period, dynasties 18 through 26, ca. 1550 to 664 BCE. What a stunning necklace! Painstakingly made of hundreds of ancient faience "mummy" beads strung in 6 strands and then braided in double lengths of blue, tan and brown. Just the separation of the beads into color families must have taken dozens of hours and produced quite the eye strain - speaking from experience! Size: 42" L x 1" W (106.7 cm x 2.5 cm)

Mummy beads, often found in ancient Egyptian tombs, were not merely decorative but held deep symbolic and protective meanings. These beads, typically made of faience, were believed to offer the deceased protection and aid their journey into the afterlife. The colors and patterns on the beads were thought to invoke specific deities and ensure a successful rebirth. They were often placed in the tombs in net patterns, faces, images of the gods or geometric patterns.
