Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse Culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A beautiful and wearable twisted gold ring, expertly formed from lengths of high-purity gold (83.4%, equivalent to 20K). The upper half of the shank features alternating thicker bands and finer, gold wires, while the spiraling form tapers into a smooth, solid band along the lower portion. In Viking society, where standardized minted currency was rare, personal wealth was often kept in the form of jewelry made from precious metals. It was common practice to amass hoards of such objects and deposit them, frequently in rivers or other bodies of water. Gold objects - especially rings - were extremely rare and typically reserved for individuals of the highest status, often found only in elite graves. Size of band opening: 0.8" Diameter (2 cm); US ring size 10; gold quality: 83.4% (equivalent to 20K); silver quality: 14.4%; weight: 12.3 grams
