Lot 23
Native American, Southeastern United States, Weeden Island culture, Late Woodland period, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A Weeden Island punctated pottery bowl formed as a reclining animal effigy, likely an armadillo or bat shown on its back, where utility gives way to wit, observation, and a quietly playful approach to form. The vessel is modeled as a rounded body bowl with a projecting head at one end and a tail at the other, each flanked by two small feet or paws that stabilize the form and reinforce its animal identity. The overall silhouette is compact and grounded, with the bowl cavity opening upward from the creature's torso. The surface is dark fired, ranging from deep brown to blackened earthen tones, with mottled firing clouds that emphasize its organic character. Encircling the rim is a band of punctated decoration, carefully impressed while the clay was still leather hard. These evenly spaced marks create a tactile border that visually separates the interior from the sculptural exterior. Size: 11.3" L x 9.6" W x 4.8" H (28.7 cm x 24.4 cm x 12.2 cm)
The effigy form anticipates later Mississippian pottery traditions, where animal imagery becomes increasingly prominent and structurally integrated into vessel design. Here, the animal is not merely decorative but structural, shaping the vessel itself. This continuity suggests a shared symbolic vocabulary across centuries, linking Late Woodland Weeden Island communities to the later Mississippian world that would follow.
Weeden Island cultures flourished across the Gulf Coast and interior Southeast, with ceremonial pottery playing a central role in ritual life. Effigy vessels such as this example likely carried layered meanings, combining references to the natural world, cosmology, and community identity. Both functional and expressive, this bowl stands as a compelling early expression of Southeastern effigy ceramics, bridging observation and imagination while pointing forward to the sculptural traditions that would later define Mississippian art.
