Description:

North America or Siberia, Pliocene to Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A richly colored fossilized mastodon tooth from an older adult who had spent a lifetime chewing, with the crown and root preserved in the condition when the animal died (or lost the tooth). When young, this tooth would have been high-crowned. In fact, the name mastodon comes from the French naturalist Georges Cuvier in 1817, and means "nipple teeth" because of the shape of the tooth in the animal's youth and prime. These teeth were suited to mashing leaves and twigs rather than grasses; mastodons lived in forested environments, unlike mammoths, who lived in open grasslands. Over time, the teeth would wear down, gaining this appearance. Size: 5.75" W x 3.5" H (14.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
