Description:

Western to Central Asia, Mesopotamia, ca. 2500 to 1500 BCE. Absolutely stunning necklace that is ready to wear! Composed of chalcedony - one of the most prized gemstones of the ancient world - along with clear quartz crystal and carnelian. The chalcedony was roughly polished but in natural "boulder" form, with largest reserved as central pendant. There are 4 crescent-shaped beads in opalescent quartz or light chalcedony and dozens of carnelian round spacer beads. Restrung on fishing line with modern silver-tone clasp. Size: 26" L x 1" W (66 cm x 2.5 cm)

Chalcedony, a variety of silica with a smooth, waxy luster, was extensively used in ancient art and jewelry for its beauty and durability. Ancient cultures, particularly in the Mediterranean region and beyond, prized it for carvings, seals, and other decorative items. Chalcedony's versatility, combined with its subtle color variations, made it a popular choice for creating intricate designs and personalized pieces. Chalcedony was believed to have protective properties, particularly against poisoning, and was sometimes worn as an amulet. In some cultures, chalcedony was associated with wisdom, serenity, and emotional balance.
