Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $400

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A finely executed and lively shaman figural whistle, extensively adorned with a floral headdress, large round earspools, a beaded pectoral, a nosering, and a fanciful garment, all of which were painstakingly created with applied filets and disk pieces. I love the expression and pose of this figure. Holding one arm upward while chanting or singing, this piece truly captures a ritualistic moment! The artist also accented the warrior's face with black bitumen teardrop-like markings adding to the uniqueness of this piece. A superb example from the ancients of Vera Cruz. Wood block stand. Size: figure alone measures 4.75" W x 8.25" H (12.1 cm x 21 cm); 10.875" H (27.6 cm) with stand

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL, acquired before 1975
