Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1070 to 712 BCE. This is a beautiful small amulet, in excellent condition, showing the god Bes with hieroglyphs on his back (a pressing is attached to the front of his custom stand). Bes is shown with exquisite detail, including finely rendered hands, feet, jewelry, and phallus; his face and ears are naturalistic. He has a beard which is often interpreted as a lion's mane; his plumed headdress is also diagnostic of the character. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. An amulet like this one was made to be worn for protection. See a very similar example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Size: 0.8" W x 1.25" H (2 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
