Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1000 to 500 BCE. An unusual carved jade duck pendant/pectoral of stunning verdant green hues. Carved on one side with drilled circular eyes, incised cheek feathers, and a long trapezoidal beak - flat on the underside. While this form may seem whimsical, Olmec statuettes representing figures donning duck masks suggest that Olmec shaman may have worn duck masks to assume an altar ego. Iconographically in the Pre-Columbian world, ducks were viewed as sacred animals of the watery realm and the sky world, as they could both dive deep under water and fly long distances through the air. Laterally perforated for suspension. Size: 1.625" L x .625" W (4.1 cm x 1.6 cm)

Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over 25 years from various major galleries.
