Native American, Eastern Woodlands, Woodland period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A group of three Native American stone axe heads including one light gray example with a 3/4 groove and two ungrooved or celt forms. The darker ungrooved axe bears an inscription indicating it was found in Stewart County, Tennessee, while the 3/4 grooved example retains a label noting discovery in central Iowa. Stone axes of this type were essential woodworking tools throughout the Woodland period, shaped through grinding and polishing to produce durable cutting edges. Size of largest: 5" L x 1.6" W x 2.7" H (12.7 cm x 4.1 cm x 6.9 cm)
