Militaria, France, 1916 CE. A large French brass Howitzer gun shell cartridge casing, marked on the head 75 DEC, the DEC relates to "Field gun de Campagne". This particular example of trench art is embossed with holly leaves and berries and crafted in an Art Nouveau style with a pointed motif circumambulating the rim. VERDUN (after the battle) is engraved beneath the fluted base. Size: 12" H x 3-3/4 in diameter.

Document accompanying the piece reads, "Every piece of Trench Art relates to the story of the momentous experience of its maker whether front-line soldier, prisoner of war, or civilian refugee. The objects resonate with the alternating terror and boredom of war, and those created by the prisoners symbolize their struggle for survival in the camps."
