Lot 201F
United States, WWII era, ca. mid-20th century CE. A historically significant collection featuring a 1952 Columbia Records vinyl, "Marlene Dietrich Overseas - American Songs in German for the O.S.S.," accompanied by a remarkable photographic archive of aerial strikes carried out by the 456th Bombardment Group during World War II. The collection includes 46 silver gelatin photographs, each approximately 9.5" by 9.25" (24.1 cm x 23.5 cm), depicting bomb runs and target strikes across Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Romania. Many are inscribed on the verso in pencil, identifying strategic sites such as aircraft factories, communication centers, and industrial complexes. Also included are three smaller photographs and two additional prints with typewritten labels, one showing a 1915 World War I scene of German soldiers surrendering to French troops, likely used for propaganda purposes. Size of photos: 9.5" L x 9.25" W (24.1 cm x 23.5 cm
The 456th Bombardment Group was a World War II U.S. Army Air Forces unit formed in 1943 and equipped with B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. Stationed in Italy as part of the Fifteenth Air Force, the group conducted long-range bombing missions across Europe, striking oil refineries, rail lines, and industrial centers vital to the Axis war effort. Its aircrews faced intense enemy fire and challenging conditions but earned distinction for their precision and determination, receiving two Distinguished Unit Citations for exceptional performance in combat. After the war, the 456th returned to the United States and was briefly redesignated for heavy bomber operations before being deactivated in 1945. The group's legacy endures through its contributions to strategic air campaigns that helped weaken the Axis powers' industrial and military capacity. Together, these items form a vivid visual and cultural record connecting the propaganda, intelligence, and combat documentation efforts of mid-20th-century warfare.
