Description:

Southeast Asia, Southeastern China, Laos , Vietnam, Thailand, Yao culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A vibrant Yao ceremonial adornment composed of long, dyed red cotton strands gathered into dense tassels that cascade dramatically when worn. These strands are secured to rows of beaded threads - white, red, green, and blue glass beads - attached to a series of silver pendants, some showing traces of former enamel decoration. Suspended beneath these pendants are snake chains and multiple clusters of small silver bells, their soft jingling intended to enliven movement and draw attention during festivals or ritual appearances. The entire assembly connects to a 6-inch silver snake chain fitted with terminal loops and filigree barrel-shaped finials, along with additional dangling bells, allowing the piece to be tied or hooked to a headdress, hair, or the neck of traditional garments so that it hangs freely down the wearer's back. Size: 24" L x 5" W (61 cm x 12.7 cm); silver quality: 55% to 98%

  • Condition: Patina and dark toning to silver areas and the snake chain is probably missing an attached bell or two, but this does not affect presentation. Indentations to some bells. Overall excellent. Red fiber tassels are prone to tangling, so this may need some gentle finger combing.
