Description:

Southern Africa, South Africa, Zulu, ca. early 20th Century CE. A carved wooden meat platter, supported on four stout legs, with integral squared handles and a wide, shallow basin. Used during communal feasts, such platters were traditionally employed to present meat consumed following a cattle sacrifice. The underside is blackened and retains a faint earthy scent, suggesting regular use and the application of oils or animal fat. A band of geometric carving along the base adds sculptural contrast to the smoothed, timeworn surface. The Zulu were traditionally cattle herders, with cattle occupying a central place in their economy, social organization, and ritual life. Ownership signified wealth and status, and cattle played essential roles in ceremonies, marriage exchanges, and as a vital food resource. Size: 17" L x 9.75" W x 3" H (43.2 cm x 24.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
