Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

Native American, Western United States, Upper Midwest / Northern Plains Tribes, Dakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A collection of 5 red catlinite (pipestone) carvings: horseshoes, arrowhead, turtle, and hatchet axe. The horseshoes and axe are etched with floral motifs, and the arrow depicts a chief in profile and the inscription "Pipestone Minn." Located in southwestern Minnesota, the city of Pipestone gets its name from this red stone and the quarries in that area where Native American tribes historically obtained the red pipestone to carve pipes for ceremonial and spiritual use. In the late 19th and early 20th century carvings such as these were primarily made as souvenirs for tourists. Size of hatchet: 7" L x 3" W (17.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
