Description:

Central Africa, Angola, Chokwe (or Tchokwe) People, ca. 1920s CE. A finely carved example of a Pwo mask, its smooth planes and precise incisions capturing the elegance and dignity of Chokwe ideals of womanhood. The face is serene yet commanding, with almond-shaped, half-lidded eyes that exude quiet authority. Characteristic Tchokwe scarification marks are boldly incised: a complex diamond-and-cross motif at the center of the forehead, curved chevron-like tattoos along the cheeks, and a linear mark running from lip to chin. The open, gritted mouth with triangular teeth conveys a sense of vitality, while the softly modeled nose and high forehead emphasize refined beauty. Traditionally, Pwo masks embody the spirit of the ideal mother and woman, symbols of fertility, grace, and cultural continuity. Despite being female in representation, such masks are danced by men, who perform acrobatically - often on tall poles - accompanied by elaborate fiber coiffures and costumes. Size: 6.5" W x 8.1" H (16.5 cm x 20.6 cm); 12.8" H (32.5 cm) on included custom stand.

This example retains its powerful sculptural presence even without the original fiber adornment, the drilled perimeter holes still visible for attachment. Whether in ceremonial context or in the quiet space of a collection, it stands as a testament to Chokwe artistry and the enduring resonance of ancestral beauty.
