Description:

Africa, Angola, Ovimbundu Peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An elegant ceremonial staff from the Ovimbundu people of central Angola, carved from dense hardwood. The upper portion of the staff is finely rendered with a stylized human head, exhibiting an elongated facial plane with incised geometric coiffure and serene expression. One side of the head is adorned with a carved lappet-like element that may reference traditional hairstyles or symbolic headgear. The shaft itself is long and slender, tapering subtly toward the base, and shows smooth wear consistent with age and ritual handling.Such staffs were emblems of prestige and authority among the Ovimbundu, often associated with elders, chiefs, or spiritual leaders. The minimalist yet evocative carving style reflects the refined sculptural tradition of Angola, blending utility and symbolism in a dignified object of cultural significance. Size: 21.25" L x 3" W (54 cm x 7.6 cm); 21.75" H (55.2 cm) on included custom stand.
