East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of Chinese export porcelain bowls from the Qing Dynasty, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue on white porcelain and produced for overseas markets during the 19th century. The bowls differ slightly in scale and painterly approach, reflecting the workshop variability typical of export wares made for European and American consumers. One bowl is painted with a bold floral spray featuring a large central blossom with scrolling leaves, executed in confident, dark cobalt lines beneath a clear glaze. The exterior is framed by simple horizontal bands at the rim, while the interior is left largely plain, emphasizing the clarity of the porcelain body. The second bowl is decorated with looser, more spontaneous vine and floral motifs arranged in horizontal registers, with calligraphic brushwork and pooling cobalt typical of late Qing export production. Size of larger: 7.4" Diameter x 3.2" H (18.8 cm x 8.1 cm)

Both bowls rest on low, unglazed footrings exposing the buff-colored porcelain body, with kiln grit and firing marks visible, consistent with period manufacture. Minor variations in glaze tone, cobalt saturation, and foot finishing speak to hand production rather than uniform factory output.

Blue and white export porcelain formed a major component of Chinas global trade in the 19th century, supplying Western households with durable yet decorative tablewares inspired by traditional Chinese motifs but adapted to foreign tastes. Pairs such as these offer a concise view into the commercial ceramics of the late Qing period, balancing functionality with expressive brushwork and enduring visual appeal.
