Description:

East Africa, Ethiopia, Welega Province, Oromo People, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A bold traditional chair, masterfully carved from a single block of dense, dark wood. Supported by three gracefully splayed legs and a thick, rounded seat, it features a tall backrest with a striking geometric cut-out pattern that adds both visual lightness and structural strength. The seat's surface has been worn to an exceptionally smooth finish, and the rich, dark patina testifies to generations of use, imparting a warm and tactile presence. Functional yet sculptural, utilitarian furniture such as this profoundly influenced modernist design movements. Size: 17.5" W x 36" H (44.4 cm x 91.4 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection, acquired from tribal arta dealer Kumel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, February 1994
