Description:

North Africa, Sahara region, Algeria / Niger, Tuareg (Berber), ca. 19th to early-20th century CE. A pair of forged iron currency hoes, each featuring a thick, curved base that tapers into a rectangular mid-section grip before extending into a long, slender cylindrical shaft. The shaft rises to a distinctive rounded head with downturned, wing-like extensions on both sides. Each shaft displays incised linear bands, etched geometric motifs, and stippled surface details along the thicker lower section. These heavy iron implements served as forms of currency, exchanged for goods and services across Tuareg communities, and held particular significance as part of marriage dowries, symbolizing wealth and stability. Their sculptural silhouettes, rich surface patina, and cultural resonance make them striking examples of utilitarian art from the Tuareg blacksmithing tradition. Size: 55" L x 6" W (139.7 cm x 15.2 cm)
