Lot 140
Europe, Neoclassical period, Etruscan Revival, ca. 19th century CE. A radiant 19th century Etruscan Revival pendant of fine gold, its circular form centered by a polished cabochon amethyst glowing with deep violet hues. The gem is set within a richly ornamented mount of 87.7% gold, its surface meticulously worked in the distinctive Neoclassical Etruscan manner that captivated 19th century jewelers. The surrounding border is decorated with a precise beaded granulation and repousse triangles, echoing the geometric motifs of ancient Etruscan goldwork rediscovered during the archaeological fervor of the mid-1800s. The pendant embodies the 19th century fascination with antiquity, when jewelers sought to revive the technical mastery and symbolic richness of early Mediterranean adornments. Inspired by excavations at sites such as Cerveteri and Vulci, goldsmiths in Rome, Paris, and London recreated the opulence of the ancient world with modern finesse. Size: 1.4" L x 1.1" W (3.6 cm x 2.8 cm); gold quality: 87.7% (about 21 karats); weight: 9.5 grams
This example captures that synthesis perfectly - the deep purple of the amethyst evoking regal power and spiritual wisdom, while the warm glow of the high-content gold conveys permanence and devotion. Suspended from a granulated bail, the piece would have adorned a fine chain or ribbon, serving both as personal ornament and statement of cultivated taste. Its craftsmanship reflects the era's reverence for classical ideals of proportion, balance, and beauty - a golden echo of antiquity brought vividly to life.
