Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A finely crafted 19th century Mexican machete, distinguished by its robust carbon steel blade, bone grip, and original tooled leather sheath. The broad blade, forged for both utility and defense, flares slightly at the tip and retains a functional edge, its surface bearing the subtle patina of age and use. The handle, carved from animal bone, is faceted into angular planes, lending both strength and a geometric elegance to the design. The fitted sheath is fashioned from rich brown leather and decorated with incised linear patterns, with the upper section embossed in a fan-like motif framed by a shield-shaped medallion. Such detailing elevates the weapon beyond mere functionality, underscoring the craftsmanship and artistry of traditional Mexican leatherwork in the 19th century. Size: 19.2" L x 2.6" W (48.8 cm x 6.6 cm)

Machetes in Mexico held dual significance: as indispensable tools for clearing fields and daily labor, and as formidable weapons in times of conflict. During the turbulent 19th century, marked by wars of independence, regional revolts, and shifting political power, the machete emerged as both a practical implement and a symbol of resilience. This example, preserved with its original sheath, embodies that dual legacy of necessity and identity.
