Lot 32
North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A traditional calabash bowl of classic 'umeke form, carved from rich brown kou wood with a highly polished surface and rounded base. This distinctive vessel features multiple early Hawaiian repairs - referred to as "pewa" or "butterfly" patches - executed in varying sizes and directions, evidence of the bowl's valued and prolonged use. The interior is smooth and deeply burnished from use while the exterior glows with warm tonal variation and grain patterning. A cherished object of daily and ceremonial life, the bowl embodies the Hawaiian traditions of utility, restoration, and reverence for craftsmanship. Size: 6" Diameter x 4.25" H (15.2 cm x 10.8 cm)
