Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, norther Luzon, Igorot, Kankanaey people, ca. early 20th century CE. A powerful early 20th century Kankanaey Pamadingan granary door panel, carved in deep relief from a single slab of richly grained narra wood. The central figure stands with arms and legs outstretched, the abstracted human form boldly rendered with simplified contours, squared shoulders, and a slightly tilted head. A slot for the wooden door bolt pierces the panel at the midsection, its placement integrating both security function and symbolic form. Used as part of the doorway for a rice granary hut, this panel formed a vital element in protecting the community's most important food resource. The figure, with its commanding posture, is thought to embody ancestral or protective spirits, guarding the precious grain stores from both human intruders and unseen spiritual threats. The slot for the bolt reinforced the security of the granary, while the carved figure signaled the cultural importance of the structure. Size: 12" L x 3.6" W x 32" H (30.5 cm x 9.1 cm x 81.3 cm)

The surface bears a deep, warm patina developed through decades of use, with tool marks and age-related wear attesting to its long service. Such Pamadingan panels exemplify the blend of utilitarian craftsmanship and spiritual symbolism characteristic of Kankanaey woodcarving traditions. Rare survivors like this piece not only represent the artistry of Northern Luzon hill tribes, but also the enduring role of protective imagery in the everyday life of the Philippine highlands.
