Lot 161
Spanish Colonial, Peru, ca. 19th century CE. A radiant marriage of devotion and craftsmanship, this 19th century Spanish Colonial candelabra from Peru balances sacred symbolism and sculptural grace in hand-wrought iron and wood, ornamented with a brass alloy sunburst and generous traces of gilding. Designed to hang from a chain-linked crown, the piece flares outward in a triangular flourish of scrolled iron arms terminating in two candle holders and a central medallion. At its heart blazes a painted solar disk - a gleaming symbol of divine illumination - bearing two devotional images, each rendered with painterly warmth. On one side appears a crowned female saint, her gentle face framed by a garland of flowers, likely Saint Rose of Lima, the first canonized saint of the Americas and a beloved figure throughout Peru. On the reverse, a seated holy figure is enthroned and encircled by saints or apostles, evoking celestial court scenes central to Catholic iconography. Size: 25.4" W x 25.8" H (64.5 cm x 65.5 cm)
The ironwork exhibits fine colonial baroque sensibility with its curvilinear flourishes and vegetal motifs, while the gilding - though worn with time - retains flashes of its original splendor, catching the light like sacred fire. This object was likely intended for ecclesiastical use, suspended in a chapel or cloistered oratory, its dual-sided imagery offering blessings to those who passed beneath. An evocative testament to the fusion of European Catholic devotion and local artisanry in the colonial Andes, this candelabra stands as both a functional lighting fixture and a richly symbolic devotional object.
