Description:

Native American, Western United States, California, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. Two coiled baskets purportedly from the collection of Joni Mitchell, the iconic American folk singer and cultural figure. The smaller basket is particularly unusual- crafted using a coiled foundation completely overstitched in cotton thread. While its exact origin is unclear, the underlying structure appears to be rod or bundled grass or leaf fiber, though not of traditional Native American material. This method and material suggest it may be a 20th-century craft basket, possibly folk or mission revival. The larger basket an example of a bottle-necked jar form, attributed to the Yokuts or Maidu peoples of California. It displays a broad, flattened shoulder and a slightly flared neck, and coiled using indigenous plant materials like bracken fern root, sedge root, and willow shoots. Size of largest: 12.5" W x 5" H (31.8 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private Estate of J.H. collection, Studio City, California, USA; ex-Joni Mitchell collection, American singer & songwriter
