Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, San Ildefonso Pueblo, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely wedding vase fired to a dark black hue, the exterior of the vessel exhibits an intense luster. The decoration is applied by painting a matte slip over the heavily burnished surface. The base is signed "MARIE" in capital letters, raising the question of whether this was created by the famed potter Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980). However, this signature differs from most of Maria Martinez's, which are typically in cursive. See below for more information on the signature. Size: 5.75" L x 3.5" W x 6.5" H (14.6 cm x 8.9 cm x 16.5 cm)

Over the course of her long career Martinez's signature varied, but her earliest signed pieces were often just marked in cursive as "Marie" (with an "E") from about 1920 to 1925. Her husband, Julian, helped paint these pieces, but their names only began to appear together on pottery around 1925 until his death in 1943. She then used her true name "Maria" (with an "A") to sign subsequent pieces.
