Description:

North America, Southwestern & Midwestern United States, Eastern Woodland cultures and Hohokam / Casas Grandes traditions, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A collection of three large discoidal stones. The largest example, from the Hohokam / Casas Grandes region, is thick and torus-shaped with a central perforation resembling a large doughnut. Its precise function remains uncertain, though similar forms have been suggested for use as tools, possibly for corn processing, as weights attached to digging sticks, or as components in weaving implements. The midsized stone features a shallow indented face and bears a note attributing it to Kankakee, Illinois, consistent with Eastern Woodland discoidals often associated with chunkey game stones. The smallest example, with indentations on both faces, is also likely Midwestern in origin and may have served as a gamestone. Size of largest: 6" Diameter x 2.75" W (15.2 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private Sheffield, Massachusetts, USA collection
