Lot 55
Native American, Mississippian, culture, Arkansas, Poinsett County, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. This Mississippian Caddo pottery jug is a well-proportioned example of classic Caddo ceramic form. The vessel features a globular body and a short, cylindrical neck with a slightly flared rim. The surface is plain, without engraved decoration, emphasizing the balanced profile and careful construction. The jug was hand-built using coiling techniques and smoothed prior to firing. The surface displays natural variations in tone, with areas of gray and buff coloration typical of Mississippian firing conditions. The restrained finish and rounded form are consistent with Caddo utilitarian and ceremonial wares of the period. Reportedly found in Poinsett County, Arkansas, the vessel originates from a region associated with Mississippian mound sites and Caddo occupation. Caddo potters were highly skilled ceramicists whose vessels are recognized for their refined shapes, technical control, and regional stylistic consistency. Size: 7.3" Diameter x 7" H (18.5 cm x 17.8 cm)
This example has notable provenance. It was formerly part of The Andy Warhol Collection and was later sold at Sotheby's. Warhol collected widely across cultures and periods, and this jug represents a documented piece from that collection history. A solid and authentic example of Mississippian Caddo pottery, this jug combines archaeological significance with distinguished modern provenance.
