Lot 36A
Ancient Near East, The Levant, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE; Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming duo of ancient ceramic animal figures, featuring a mold-made Roman ram and a hand-molded equine companion. The ram displays tightly coiled horns, an upright posture, and expressive features rendered in a compact, stylized form. The equine figure, likely representing a horse or donkey, is hand-formed from terracotta with applied details including a bridle and prominent ear shapes. Notably, the bridle includes what appear to be blinders (blinkers) - an intriguing early innovation designed to help focus the animal's attention, particularly useful in contexts like chariot racing. Size of ram: 4.5" L x 1.5" W x 4.75" H (11.4 cm x 3.8 cm x 12.1 cm)
